Fake Mac - what the heck?

Tonight I watched S7 "On the Fly," and it reminded me of something I've been wanting to mention. I find it super creepy that Magnum insists on calling Jim Bonnick "Mac." And what is even weirder is that he's got the other three doing the same thing. They all call Bonnick "Mac" in this episode, sometimes in referring to him and sometimes to his face. It's bizarre, especially since as far as I recall, they barely knew MacReynolds. As a matter of fact, in "On the Fly," Rick speaks to Magnum about this issue and refers to the late MacReynolds as "your friend Mac." He doesn't say our friend, he says your friend.

Is anyone else really weirded out by this?!

Well, if I had a friend who got blown up in a Ferrari by a Russian agent (who I later shot in cold blood), which caused me to go into a deep depression, grow a beard and throw beer bottles into a tidal pool - and then I met that dead friend's exact twin, identical in every way except for a moustache and a tendency to pull outrageous scams... I'd want to call him "Mac" too. (...but what are the odds?)

The odds are zero. But, apparently it did happen, soooo...

By the way, you can call me "Mac" if you want to.

Actually I've read a pretty good fanfic (most FF is garbage but once in a while one comes across a talented writer) where Higgins gets mistaken for Fake Mac based on a physical description. It seems the bad guys were looking for Fake Mac and were told to find a guy on the estate who was "short, fat, dark hair, mustache, and no glasses. And that's you, pal!" Of course Higgins was thoroughly offended by this, and then he got kidnapped by the bad guys and rescued by Magnum. It was a good story. Fake Mac was in trouble for something to do with stolen art.

EDIT: Here, if anyone wants to read it. http://littlecalamity.tripod.com/Stories/Thufferin.html

Another thing.. "Mac" or "Mack" in the old days (30's-50's) was like saying "man" or "pal" (post-90's versions being the extremely annoying "dude" or "bro"), and could be used as a way of addressing somebody without knowing their name. Think of somebody like Humphrey Bogart saying something like, "Listen, Mack - if you keep pushing me like that, you're going to get your head bent."

For some reason, I read that in Rick's voice.
