RECURRING EPISODE THEMES
As you may have deduced I love to decipher the patterns, trends and statistics about the show. Here is a hodgepodge of information about the plots of many of the episodes. (There are some overlaps. For instance Thank Heaven for Little Girls started out as a missing person caseand ended up protecting an inanimate object - a painting)
28 episodes involved a murder investigation (Too numerous to list but I can if you really want!)
26 episodes involved a missing person (Too numerous to list- Just let me know if you want the list) Most missing persons were found!! Some turned out to be a victim!!
16 episodes Magnum was asked to be a bodyguard including protecting animals. (Too numerous to list. Can do here too!)
9 episodes involved an inanimate object of value: China Doll, Ki'is Don't Lie, Arrow That is Not Aimed, Little Games, Torah-Torah-Torah, Legend of the Lost Art, Transitions, Smaller Than Life, Thank Heaven for Little Girls....Feel free to add another if you know about it.
4 episodes involved WWII: Never Again...Never Again, Lest We Forget, Almost Home, Forty Years From Sand Island - Add on if you can.
4 episodes involved kidnapping: Return of Luther Gillis, Taking of Dick McWilliams, Legacy of Garwood Huddle, Missing Melody. Two others threatened or referred to kidnapping: Adelaide and Echoes of the Mind.
2 episodes involved cheating wives: Faith and Begorrah and Computer Date.
The following sports were covered in at least one episode: Baseball, Football, Basketball, Tennis, Bicycling, Running, Swimming, Croquet, Skeet, Para-Sailing, Boxing, Track and Field and Rodeo riding. (I could have sworn I remembered Polo being played by Higgins or at least some reference to it. Help me out on this on Forum?!?)

UPDATE: Cricket is referenced in Mac's Back as Higgins wears his cricket uniform. KingKC

Re: RECURRING EPISODE THEMES
Higgins mentioned that riding the bucking bronco in The Elmo Ziller story was nothing compared to the polo matches he used to participate in, I believe. And there may have been some polo stuff in Home from the Sea. Can't remember.
Volleyball popped up in a few episodes. Adelaide, the Legacy From a Friend (I think), and at the end of Skin Deep.
Horses hurdling is likely different sport than rodeo riding, I suppose.
Surf Ski racing.
There was another episode that had a very short scene involving a case with a cheating couple. Magnum was taking photos of them but decided to let them get away with it because he thought they were in love. I think he described the male as a car salesman. I can't remember the episode though. Maybe "Mac's back"

Update: There are references to a polo match in the episode: Ms. Jones. Can anyone with a DVD collection confirm that and give a few details. There was some information about flubs in the numbering of the horse in the Episode guide. Thanks.

What about Snooker? I know Higgins followed it on satellite tv in one episode. Or Snucker as Magnum called it.

Re: RECURRING EPISODE THEMES
I remember a story from years ago when a state (New Jersey??) was enacting a sporting event tax and wrestling declared itself to be entertainment and not a sport. The funny thing is that many athletes, especially football players, drop out or flunk out of professional wrestling tryouts because it is a lot more physical and harder than they think. I think we can accept it as a sport for MPI.
Kudos to the Forum and to my amazement there were a lot more sports represented in MPI than I imagined.

Re: RECURRING EPISODE THEMES
There was actually 2 episodes with surfing in it. I would have thought the show being in Hawaii and how popular surfing is there that there would have been some more episodes with that theme. But obviously Magnum didn't traditionally surf, he surf ski'd (I don't think that is an actual sport lol).Mrs. Higgins wrote:We can't forget Mr. White Death and the sport of wrestling!

Surf on TM........

"C'mon TC...nothing can go wrong!"
Re: RECURRING EPISODE THEMES
Wow there really are a lot of sports mentioned/shown when you list them!
Don't know if it counts in this context, but paragliding in the episode 'Mad Buck Williams' - beginning and end of the episode.

Re: RECURRING EPISODE THEMES
Swimming, bicycling and running have been mentioned individually, but TM also participated in a triathlon too.
How about scuba diving?
