Is Higgins anyone else's favorite character?

#1 Post by MagnumFan »

Yes, I know TM is the star...But honestly, I love Higgins. He's just great. He's like an older, wiser, more mature Magnum. I also am very much fond of the World War II era and he has the attributes of a classic British gentleman, in the mold of a David Niven type. Anyone else find him their favorite? I so wish Higgins had gotten a spinoff - I mean, showing his younger years. If I had to trade Quantum Leap, which is one of my favorite shows, for a Higgins prequel, I think I would've gladly.

While I can't claim that Higgins is my favorite character--I like the four guys equally-- I can say that even as a kid I found his stories to be fascinating (and I love it that Magnum-Mania chronicles those stories in the episode guide).

They really were a true ensemble. The show wouldn't have worked without one any one part missing. While Magnum was the focus and star of the show, the chemistry between the four guys really made the show as magic as it was (along with the depth of the writing, the humor, the memorable moments). The chemistry and unique personalities of cast made the show truly the sum of its parts. I daresay that Magnum, P.I. was in some ways ahead of its time - with regard to the depth of the writing. It managed to be both fun and deep, whereas previously, you had shows which really went too far in either direction - either too cerebral or too humorous; It was bright, yet at times very dark and gritty. Compare Magnum to other popular shows of the time such as The A-Team. Miami Vice was grittier, but I don't think there would've been a Miami Vice without Magnum, P.I. opening the door for shows like it.

Magnum, P.I. is also noteworthy in that it had an outstanding secondary(!) supporting cast. Characters like Tanaka, Doc Ibold, Agatha, Mac(s), Luther, (and yes, even Carol) et al., all contributed in making MPI so good.

Sometimes I think Higgins made the show but the next week it would be TM and the next week TC and the next week Rick. You get the picture. I fully agree that the supporting staff helped the show tremendously. I said this somewhere else but Agatha helped make the Higgins character even better!!!
