Is this a sportswear logo just for MPI? I noticed he only wore it for maybe two season? Anyone know?

It was a local Hawaiian brand...read here, Hawaii Winds!

at one time, I heard that there was a possibility of them making a small run of the old hats....anyone ever hear what happened to that idea?

I picked myself up one a couple years back off eBay. Fan made a pretty spot on reproduction.

Might still be available if you check?
