I have been a visitor to this site for a while, and am now proud to say I am an official member. This site has a wealth of info for the MPI fan. I just finished watching the E True Holywood story in the video section, what a great upload!
I have a question regarding the season 1-8 DVD's and thought you all would be about the best people to ask (sorry if this is posted in the wrong area). Anyway, back to my question. I am thinking of finally breaking down and buying the series on DVD (I am starting to tire of the same 20 episodes RTN seems to rotate thru every few weeks). Does anyone have any suggestions on the best/cheapest place tho purchase the series on DVD? I see amazon has each season for about $30-35 individually, and seems like I can beat that a bit on ebay, but I figure there might be a better place to get all 8 seasons toghether? [There is one aution on ebay for all 8 seasons for $300!]
I did find one website selling the entire series as a "boxset" for only $99, but the packaging is clearly unique and it makes me think this is more of an unauthorized version and I am wondering if anyone else is familiar with this version and can speak to the set and its quality? Here is the link to the $99 set:

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi Jake, welcome!
Sadly, there has been no official box set released. You can only get the individual seasons.
Anything you see advertised as a box set is pirated, more than likely dubbed from the syndication airings. You'll want to stay away from these. The quality is poor and you'll be missing out on several minutes of footage in each episode (as several minutes are trimmed for syndication).
Wal-Mart is probably your best bet.

The financial crisis has hit fellow member Lt Tanaka and he's selling all 8 seasons for cheap...

I'd go for Amazon if you're looking to get the sets straight up. Very few big box stores carry all 8 seasons anymore for Magnum... at least up here in Metro Detroit.
If you can find a few from Wal-Mart (pained expression).. grab them, as they'll probably be your best value. The rest, get from Amazon. Agree with James that any Box set is pirated.
I wouldn't touch any other Magnum set until they got it with Blue-ray and extras!

Although I was generally disappointed with the lack of extras, I've always considered Magnum Mania to be the best "extras" possible. There's more bonus material on each episode here than they could ever pack into a dvd bonus mini-doc.Doc Ibold wrote:I wouldn't touch any other Magnum set until they got it with Blue-ray and extras!
Still, it'd be great to have some current candid interviews.

There's always exceptions, but generally you can probably get the box sets cheaper going into physical stores as opposed to trying to buy online. As others said, try WalMart or similar type stores. If they don't have them all on stock, buy the first couple seasons and get them to order in the rest for you.
Thanks for the feedback. I took the Walmart advice and stopped by several stores (there are numerous locations here in metro Detroit) and found seasons 2, 3, & 4 for $14.96 each. One helpful sales person looked up the DVD's on their system and informed me that not all seasons are actually even sold at the stores anymore (only about half), but they can all be ordered and shipped to the store of choice for pick-up. I thought I hit paydirt when I heard this, until I was told the prices! For the seasons not stocked in the stores the prices are about 2.5x the price for the ones they normall stock, and to find those seasons which are stocked it turns out you have to get lucky to find the right store. Oh well, at least I got 3 out of the 8 seasons.
I then fiinshed off the series by ordering seasons 1, 5, & 6 from Amazon (free shipping), and picked up seaons 7 & 8 off ebay. It cost me just under $170 for all 8 seasons, which I didnt think was too bad. I ended up spending about $55 more than I would have spent to have the "pirated" box set shipped to me, which I hope is worth the difference in quality.
I tried to swing a deal with fellow member Lt. Tanaka for his used DVD's, but the cost of shipping the DVD's from Japan turned out to be too prohibative.
