Buck Greene

Hi all!

Quick question - I was wondering how many ranks above Magnum would Buck Greene have been. So I looked it up quickly on Wikipedia, and according to that page, there is no ranking of 'Colonel' in the US Navy. What's the reason? Was this rank abolished since the 80's when Magnum aired?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Cheers
Steve

G'day Steve,

I'm fairly sure Greene was a Colonel in the Marine Corps.

I had to look this up though as I wasn't sure either.

Someone more knowledgeable in how the Navy and Marines work with each other would have to chime in though. From first reading, it sounds like the Marines are quite distinct from the Navy but share many of the same facilities.

Buck Greene was Colonel in the Marines. Magnum was, at his highest ranking in the show (and there is debate on his ranking at certian times), a Lt. Commander. That would make Magnum an O4 while Buck Greene was an O6. Buck's rank was the same as a Captain in the Navy while Magnum's was the same as a Major in the Marines.

My husband was in the Navy and served on the USS Constellation for 4 years. The Marines that served on the ship called the Navy guys "Squids" and the Navy guys called the Marines "Trees". Needless to say, they weren't crazy about each other! =)

We called the Marines "Jar Heads". Squids is very common. In fact most sailors call other sailors squids.

Never call a Navy ship a "boat" in front of a naval officer. I made that mistake once. Luckily the man was retired, and a friend's Grandpa so he let me off easy.

A ship is a ship. A submarine is a boat.

My upstairs neighbor is named Buck Green. Plus he's a vet of the Vietnam war. Other than that, he's alot different than LeGaunt's character!

Actually Magnum was promoted to full Commander in Memories are Forever(2) when he was reinstated to testify in Washington. So he would be one rank below Buck Greene as a Navy Commander would be equal to a Marine Lt. Colonel.

It also looks like he is a Commander in the finale, so he is one rank behind Buck.
