Episode ID Needed

#1 Post by J.J. Walters »

This is a tough one. Does anybody happen to recall the episode that this lady (briefly) appeared in?

Image

She was an extra and is uncredited (no speaking lines). She may have appeared as a bystander in a "Magnum foot case scene". Magnum/Selleck may have accidentally run into her in the scene. I say "may", because the person inquiring about the lady isn't 100% sure of the nature of the scene.

Her name is Vera Rose. She is the mother of Danny Kamekona, one Hawaii's top actors for many years (Hawaii Five-0, Magnum P.I., local theatre).

Was she one of the street vendors in Hawaii's Saigon area when Magnum was looking for Michelle - he was showing a picture of Michelle to people.

To me it looks like an early episode, pre season 4 judging by TS's haircut. I thought she might be the Vietnamese woman TM showed Michelle's photo in Memories Are Forever, but that woman was played by Soo Yong. My DVDs are in storage in Florida now, so I can't look it up.

Yeah, Memories Are Forever come to mind as well. The street vendor, but I don't know for sure.

Wow, the mother of "Sato" in Karate Kid II. Very cool! :)

Here's the woman from Memories Are Forever that Magnum shows the photos to. I don't think it looks like the same person. She has a number of lines of dialog, and appears in more than that one scene, so she wouldn't be considered an extra.
Image

I quickly looked through the whole episode and the only other person I saw who might be her is this lady, but Magnum doesn't run into her.

The fact that Vera Rose is smiling in the photo may be making it harder to recognize her in the show, but maybe we'll know when we see her. I'm guessing the chances are she appeared in a China Town scene? I can kind of picture Magnum running into someone, but can't think of what episode that might be.

Hmmmmm.

This'll have me going back into the memory banks. My first instinct was Memories are Forever (nixed).

Possibly All For One?

She said that neither of those ladies is Vera. She did say that the photo of Vera and Selleck was taken during the day of filming, so the clothes he is wearing were used in the scene in question. He definitely wore the Field Shirt and Tigers cap in "Memories", as well a bunch of others. Oh, this is gonna be tough!

This is just a guess.... but based on TM's attire I will suggest she may be the lady he pulls his gun on in the back alley at the end of "On Face Value" from season 4. I have no way to verify that right now but that's my best guess.

Wow, way to make a first post Cutter, I do believe you're correct. Magnum is chasing armed bad guys and turns a corner ready to shoot, only to find Vera standing there. She drops her dirty laundry or whatever is in the basket, and soon after the bad guys shoot from somewhere in the alley. Magnum helps Vera around the corner, but gets shot in the arm as Vera goes about her business and slowly walks through a nearby door. :)

Great job Cutter. I think it's great that we're able to help out people with links to the show who come to the forum with questions. :)

Thanks everyone. For some reason I tend to remember the clothing he wears in certain episodes (probably because I try to track a lot of it down). That field shirt is one of two tan ones he wore. The one in "Memories" is a cotton shirt while the one in this particular episode is more polyester in nature. The cotton can be seen in episodes like the Simon and Simon cross over while the other is seen in "Italian Ice" and "Tropical Madness" to name a few. I have owned both and still own the cotton. When I saw he picture I immediately thought of this episode.

It's definitely her (confirmed by her great-granddaughter). Unfortunately, Vera Rose recently passed away (she must have been ~ 100, as Danny's 1996 obit says she was 85). They are going to use some (or all) of rubber chicken's screen caps of her at the funeral. She couldn't be happier, and thanks all of you. Wow.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear she's recently passed away. I hope I get to spend 100 years on this earth as well.

Since her great-granddaughter is going to use the screenshots, I thought I'd take new ones of better quality - full sized and in .tif format. They're in this .zip file (7.5 MB). If she wants to rent the dvd the episode is on, it's season 4, disc 5, and Vera Rose appears just after the 44 minute mark. Aloha.
