Well, this is going to be my personal place to share my MPI collection.
I am an absolute beginner so this is the very first item (excluding DVDs):
I am the proud owner of one (actually two 8)) of only looking's "Al's Automotive Tigers" hats.
I don't have a digital camera available so I'll use this image from eBay

According to what only looking told me I am the first and only one to own this hat(s) here in Italy. Soooo COOL!

Yep!
This morning something else arrived.
I got my VMO2 - Da Nang patch(es) and Magnum's US Naval Academy T-Shirt (both from Rock'nRobbie's)

I'm very happy both with the patches and T-shirt!
They are cool! 8)
Now the hard part will be to find the right hat for the patch.

Looks good. I knew you'd be happy with Robbie's stuff, now that people see the design for the US Navy shirt, I can bet others will follow. The hat won't be as hard as you think, find out what size fitted hat you wear and go on ebay and type in green underbill or vintage hat (with your size) and all caps (baseball, football, etc) teams with a navy blue hat with a small enough logo on it and put your Da Nang patch right over it, Robbie owns an original and says that alot of the Da Nang hats are actually Detroit Tigers hat that have been covered and I know that in at least one scene in the chopper (can't remember the episode) you can ss the tip of the bottom of the D sticking down. But a seam ripper and a little time and patience can do wonders. :D

Yeah, I have to thank you for pointing me to Robbie's page!
He seems to be a nice guy too!
As for the hat, I'll see what I can find, thanks for the tips!
To be honest I don't think I will place the patch over another logo (I would see it as a waste  ), I'll see if I can find a blank fitted hat.

You might be pulling out your hair by the time you find a fitted blue navy hat with green underbill unless you're not going to be as picky as I was. I found a few fitted hats, but I found a vintage green underbill for actually cheapier than a new blank fitted one. Depending on money, patience, and luck Ebay can be a fun or a hair pulling time. :D Good luck in your quest.

I always wondered why Magnum's Da Nang hat was fitted. MIlitary hats like that are adjustable. I have a few left from the ship I serves on. They are green billed underneath with an adjustable strap on the back. It makes perfect sense hearing the use of Tiger hats for these. Most people wouldn't do that, but I guess cost was not a problem for a tv set staff.

Plus I wonder if they got a cost break on buying in bulk, I mean the extra hats for stunt doubles, etc and the ones going for the Da Nang hats..T.C. as well..that's several hats. Makes you wonder how many thew went through on the show.

I'm sure Magnum went through several a season especially if they used the Tigers hats as Da Nang hats.

I remember reading somewhere, maybe here, that TM wore the Da Nang cap 3 times more than the Detroit cap. Yet the iconic image of TM is with the Detroit cap.

That does sound familiar, and it also seems like he did wear the Da Nang hat much more than he did the Tigers hat. Maybe our crack research staff can look into this.

I'd say that in most publicity shots, it may be where he's wearing the Tigers hat more often, plus during the 80's with all the Magnum PI look alike contest they did it was easier getting a Tigers hat than a Da Nang hat so the image kind of sticks in your head more..just a guess though :)

I think I will go for this one that I found on the Web

It seems to have blue underbill but I'll live with that since I want to have my Da Nang hat to wear.
If I'll find one hat with green underbill in the future, I'll take it (I bought several patches 8) )
How does this hat look to you?
Btw, I am not a fabric expert. This one is 100% Acrylic.
I need a cap that I can wear in summer, when it's hot.
Do you think this is good?

I don't know, the two hats are almost "equally" iconic to me, but if I had to choose THE iconic hat I think I would go for the Da Nang one.

That looks like the same hat I got. The underbill on mine is the same blue as the hat. I think I paid around $14.00 for it at Foot Locker. I hear ya about wearing it in hot weather. That's why more often than the others I wear the Al's cap because of the mesh back. Once in a while I break out the SEAL cap, but because it's so rare, and hard to replace, I'm kind of afraid of something happening to it.

So, what do you think? Is this Acrylic stuff suitable for hot weather?
