helicopters

rubberchicken,

First of all, WHAT were you doing "wandering around" globalsecurity.org? Are you secretly CIA or something?

Secondly, the inventory list on that page shows ANOTHER 27 MD500s for use (apparently) other than "attack."

Thirdly, what I find most interesting is that all of their other helicopters have pictures posted of them, but there are none of the MD500.

I too am curious about how North Korea got 87 of "our" helicopters. I need to research that on the internet.

You're a fast responder golfmobile! :) I added the following as an edit to my previous post before I saw that you had already responded.

And no comment on the CIA question. 8)

I found more info on NK and the Hughes. From this page.

"In 1985, the DPRK circumvented U.S. export controls to buy 87 U.S.-manufactured Hughes helicopters. These helicopters are considerably more advanced than those received from the Russians. Although the DPRK has the civilian version, they probably have modified some of them to carry guns and rockets. Because the ROK produces the same model helicopter for its armed forces, the DPRK could modify their Hughes helicopters to resemble the ROK counterparts to confuse CFC air defenses during SOF operations."

and

"In 1985, North Korea circumvented United States export controls to indirectly buy eighty-seven United States manufactured civilian versions of the Hughes MD-500 helicopters before the United States government stopped further deliveries. Reports indicate that at least sixty of the helicopters delivered were modified as gunships. Because South Korea licenses and produces the MD-500 for use in its armed forces, the modified helicopters were useful in North Korea's covert or deceptive operations."

Those tricky commies. Very interesting. So I take it they're actually closer to TC's 500D version, and NK just pimped their rides so to speak.

Hope I didn't derail the thread too much.

RC,

I just found the same thing and was about to post it! Though it STILl doesn't say from whom they were purchased in the "circumventing" deal. Academic, at this point, I suppose . . . .

back to scenery discussions -- more later.

Ha, yeah we're looking at the same things now. You probably read about the Kazakhstan and Czech involvement in North Korea buying MiG-21 jets. I'm guessing it was something like that, but I too wish they would have said how the Hughes got to North Korea. I wasn't able to find another site talking about it either.

Getting on topic, I don't use flight sims, but wouldn't it be cool if a game could use Google Earth information? Google would have to allow it of course, but everything is already available it seems. Just flying around in Google Earth is fun enough, add a helicopter to it and you would have the best terrain you could hope for.

scenery

#35 Post by golfmobile »

RC,

I HAVE the Google Earth scenery in my FS. That's what's messing up my "construction" of the estate. The buildings I have available to place are not the same scale as the actual buildings on the estate.

Yes, it's pleasurably visible flying over it -- but remember it's 2D straight-down photography, so as you descend to land, you don't see 3D buildings. It rather looks as though a HUGE giant stepped on everything and squashed it flat.

I thought I posted a link to pictures I took flying over the estate prior to adding buildings in which you can see the buildings and the driveway, for example. If you don't find that in previous posts here on this thread, let me know, and I'll try to find 'em again and post them or a link to them again.

Golfmobile, at surcarlo.com under the Hawaii Magnum download there is another little package that says Robin's Nest, because according to the maker the original full package did not show Robin's Nest.

At this website here near the bottom of the page....
http://www.surclaro.com/download.php?op ... ow=10&cid=

Hope it helps in some way, I don't know if it will.
Magnum: So far this case had cost me my right to the wine cellar, the last cash in my pocket, and nearly my life. If that clerk was lying to me, I was gonna come back down here and shove that Robin Masters paperback in his ear!
