That's awesome! Just watched Paper War over the weekend. I think people tend to be divided on whether Mag's prank was funny or sad - I'm of the latter camp. I'd love a similar model to grace my study.

I always thought it funny that Higgins built the bridge to look like David Lean's classic film version, which was nothing like the actual bridge.

Higgins: "...Nothing like the film. The bridge was bombed, not blown up by some American sailor." - "Did You See the Sunrise?"

:)

The guy who made this model used chopsticks (instead of wooden matches as Higgins did). He said the local Chinese restaurant was "starting to get suspicious towards the end"! LOL!

It's been a while since I visited, but from what I recall there was a wooden bridge (possibly similar to Higgins') build before they built the one out of concrete and steel. I believe it was a "quick and dirty" solution to crossing the river that helped in the construction of the more substantial bridge. In my imagination, that's the bridge Higgins remembers so well...although, come to think of it, I'm not sure I'd want to immortalize my time in a Japanese POW camp.

The bridge built by the POW's was indeed bombed from the air and the one there now is entirely different. However, I remember the author of the book, Pierre Boulle, stating that the bridge created for the film also looked nothing like the POW-built bridge. Why then did Higgins build the film bridge?

Another funny story. Pierre Boulle was nominated for, and won, an Academy Award for the script adaptation even though he spoke little to no English! The actual writers were blacklisted. He also wrote Planet of the Apes.

J.J. - if you go on ebay and search for "Tom Selleck Tiki art print", you'll see an interesting print by Tom Thordarson. I would have copied and sent it to you, but I don't know how
