One of the Facebook comments said that the Boat/guestHouse was torn to rubbles...

But It looks like, to me, it is still there behind the branchs of the foliage...

I agree – especially after seeing the new picture posted by Gorilla Mask.
I don’t believe there is anyone on the forum who has been in any of the buildings on the estate. If there are, they’ve been hiding pretty well for the last 10 years!!! Forum member Styles Bitchley got inside the gate near the gate house and has a photo. Perhaps the photo you saw was from the set decorator, Rick Romer, who has a blog about his experiences on the show.JosipCro wrote: ↑Fri Dec 25, 2020 5:18 pm Merry Christmas everyone ...![]()
One question I would have, I don’t think I’ve asked that yet (if I’m an apology), is there anyone on this forum that was walking inside the Robins house? A guest house or a house by the entrance?
I think it would help a lot to make a sketch of the interior of the house.
I think I saw on one page on Facebook a post of one man who was allegedly inside, because there is a photo where he is pictured inside the boat on the stairs that descend into the living room of the boat. I sent a private message to that person on facebook but no reply.
Maybe that man is here on the forum too without me noticing it?

Any photo of stairs inside the boathouse is from the set. The boathouse doesn’t have interior stairs. There are pictures of the main room upstairs from the real estate listing back when it was for sale. The upstairs has the lanai, which is about 2/3 of the space, a single room about 10x14 feet, and a bathroom on the side by the perimeter wall. The ground floor, which is partially submerged except on the beach side, is a giant garage-like storage area for water paraphernalia, hence the name boathouse. It has a regular door to it on the side with stairs up to the lanai, and a large garage-type door on the beach side with a ramp down to the sand and a gate.
The interior of the main house has had many rooms shown on other TV shows, but not MPI. All the rooms in the one-story ell have been shown (living room, library, and bar/den), but not the half bath. Very little of the rest of first floor has been seen besides the main stair hall, the kitchen briefly, and an even more brief glance into the dining room. There are also two en-suite bedrooms with dressing rooms, service stairs, a butler’s pantry, servant’s dining room, trunk room, laundry, cold storage, service porch, another half bath, 5-car garage, and workshop.
Upstairs, 2 of the 3 bedrooms have been seen, 1 of the 2 sitting rooms, a dressing room, and of course the upper part of the main stair hall. There is also a sewing room and linen closet. The 3 bedrooms are en-suites, 2 with sitting rooms and lanai. All 3 have balconies.
The gate house downstairs was also shown in the real estate photos, but it had been modified into an apartment by opening up some of the spaces. It was originally 5 bedrooms for servants, along with 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, living room, laundry and 1-car garage.
All of the information about the unseen rooms existence is from 1930’s newspaper articles written at the time of Pahonu’s construction. They were located by forum member Rembrandt’s Girl.
The picture of him on the steps is the guest house set located on the stage in Diamond Head. The boathouse by the water on the Pahonu estate was used for exterior filming only and is in Waimanalo. It was called the “guest house” in the show, but the estate had no actual guest house. The boathouse, as described in my post above, is nothing like the “guest house” set on the inside.JosipCro wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 9:05 amPahonu wrote: ↑Fri Dec 25, 2020 8:49 pmI don’t believe there is anyone on the forum who has been in any of the buildings on the estate. The last photo with him as a security guard is also a set on the stage at Diamond Head. The stair hall shown, living room, and Higgin’s den do not exist at the actual estate as they were shown on the show. In fact, the estate’s actual living room is on the ocean side of the home in the one-story ell. It’s on the opposite side of where it’s shown in the show, by the driveway. The stair hall is in the middle of the actual home.
This isn’t meant in a bad way, but are you interested in the actual interior rooms of the Pahonu estate, or the sets used in the show? They are COMPLETELY different. Pretty much none of MPI was filmed inside the actual home.
You are correct. The first photo of the man sitting on the steps is NOT inside the boathouse of the Pahonu estate. He is on the set at the studio in Diamond Head. This set was built for the pilot episode and was created to be a plausible interior of the multi-level boathouse on the estate. They never filmed inside any of the rooms at Pahonu, including the boathouse. The owner at the time, Eve Anderson wouldn’t allow interior filming any more after some damage was done on a Hawaii Five-O shoot. There were a couple of small exceptions though. The set decorator, Rick Romer, explained how he had to get permission to go inside and put plants on the long upstairs balcony for filming scenes in the courtyard below.JosipCro wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 7:01 pmPahonu wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 5:28 pmThe picture of him on the steps is the guest house set located on the stage in Diamond Head. If you are interested in the actual interiors of Pahonu, I’m probably the one to ask. I created a 3D model of the entire estate with the SketchUp program. It includes all buildings and much of the landscaping and hardscape. It was created using property surveys, tax records, period newspaper articles, real estate photos, and filming from older shows that used the actual interior of the main house. It is very accurate in scale and size, however some of the interior rooms have never been seen, though their existence is known from the newspaper articles about the home’s construction. Go back to pages 140-152 of this thread and you can see some of the model and plans and where the information came from.
I’m glad to answer any questions you have about Pahonu that I can, but the most important thing to understand is that all the interiors you see on the Magnum pi show are NOT in any of the buildings of Pahonu. Interior scenes = stage sets, exterior scenes = Pahonu estate.![]()
A lot of fans of the show who aren’t familiar with the production process are surprised to learn that none of the interiors are actually in the house, but sets. However, it’s pretty much standard in television series to use sets on a soundstage for interiors that appear frequently. It’s generally less expensive and somewhat faster to film on a soundstage than on location. The pilot of MPI made use of locations entirely, except for the guest house interior, which was made because the boathouse was not usable as such. The uncertainty about whether the pilot would be sold and more episodes made led to all this location shooting. Once it was sold as a series, the costs of building sets outweighs shooting repeatedly on location. Some of these sets built later were used infrequently but could be disassembled and stored until needed again.JosipCro wrote: ↑Sat Dec 26, 2020 8:18 pmOhhhh great info! Hey GM, perfect examples! Pictures really are worth a thousand words, as they say. Yes, the production crew did build a railing just inside the door to try and match the set. There’s even a shot someone found that shows the railing, angled down to mimic the staircase rail, just screwed down in the middle of the wood floor.Gorilla Mask wrote: ↑Sun Dec 27, 2020 3:41 pm Hi JosipCro,
As a small addition, In order to illustrate Pahonu's point, here is a small comparison:
Here are two pictures from episode 1.4 where you can see the outside of the boathouse/'guesthouse' lanai (real but fitted out for the needs of the serie) and the inside which corresponds to the studio shot.

Then, back to reality, here is the famous picture published for the sale of the estate in 2014 (I think). One can see that there is no staircase and that the available space is much more limited and narrow.
If i am not mistaken, I remember that, for the need of the shooting, the decorators just set a fake stair railing in the opposite wall, facing the entrance.

Hey, Pahonu !
I highly doubt the lanai scenes were filmed on a soundstage as you can see parts of the the grounds, including the water in most of them. The only adjustment made to the actual lanai I ever noticed was to place blinds between the pillars on the side looking at the Shriner’s property. It could probably be seen from the elevated lanai, destroying the illusion of the estates size.Gorilla Mask wrote: ↑Sun Dec 27, 2020 6:20 pmHey, Pahonu !
As you could notice, you're absolutely right concerning the inverted swing axis of the door:

The hypothesis is that the shooting induced some heavy mockup on location... Or was be the 'boathouse' overhauled after 1988 ?
Another hypothesis is that the Lanai scenes were also filmed on soundstage ... unlikely ?
Many mysteries, since no one had (except from some excerpts from Hawaii 5-0) an extensive look of the inner layouts of the estate.
