Who knows, maybe the guy will make ENOUGH of a statement that we'll have an idea....
That's what I want to know. That, and one of my longtime dreams has been to swim in the tidal pool, and I'm guessing that this will be impossible to swim there.
There's really only 2 things I care about, and they are both selfish. First, I don't want the buildings razed (I want to see them sometime), and second, I hope the tidal pool doesn't become off-limits (I want to swim there someday).
I live in NC, though, and it will be a long time before I can go to Hawaii.

Hi Eagle,
I can almost guarantee that you will be able to swim in the tidal pool/turtle enclosure, as all the beaches are open to the public. The only time you might have an issue with it not being open to the public would be around the Christmas break when Obama would probably be in the area to visit his friend Marty. I think (don't quote me) they have shut down Hanauma Bay for the President and his family for a day, so if they did visit Marty at Pahonu they could do the same thing, but only for a short time. As for the buildings being razed.......who knows what is going to happen.....it sounds promising so lets hope for the best. The sooner you go, the better are your odds of seeing it intact. I know you will see more of the gate house now with all the clear cutting they have already done.

Plus, with the additional cultural significance of the turtle pond there is absolutely no way it will be made private. They could have a temporary restricted security zone for the beach/ocean adjacent to Pahonu as they do when Obama is in Kailua, but based on how long things take, I think it's safe to say the Obamas won't be staying there this Christmas.

Remember, Obama will be an ex-President wih a smaller security detail (ironically, Obama signed the bill to order lifelong protection for ex-Presidents, it used to be ten years) and I beleive he can determine if he wants it. The beach will always be open and it's not like throngs of folks go there now to see the house and/or swim in the Tidal Pool and I'm betting that less than twenty people on this board have even been there. When I went at 11:30 on a Tuesday (low tide) in April of 2007 when it was spring break-Easter time we were the only ones at the tidal pool. As I was making my way from the park down the beach I was expecting to see other folks there wearing Paradise Found Hawaiian shirts and snapping photos, discussing our favorite episodes, etc and was shocked we were the only one there. I am still going with the theory that Obama will be there as Marty Nesbitt, although a succesfull businessman, does not in my opinion make the kind of money to pay that big a mortgage and property taxes. My new theory is that it will go into a Trust, that Oprah might even be involved in, and deeded to over to The Historic First African American President. Now, if I could just figure out that whole Higgins/Robin Maters thing

This is indeed a rendering of the gatehouse, not the main house. This side of the gatehouse was only seen once in the MPI episode "The Kona Winds" and it was very close up in the garage. It's the scene where TM is fixing the generator. In my SketchUp model I originally had two garage bays, but photos released since the estate went up for sale revealed this to be wrong. I have changed it (as I need to make other changes since these renderings), but I don't know if I ever sent JJ the revised version.
Thanks Pahonu.
I was always under the impression that this has been shot in one of the garage bays from the main house.
Do we have an idea how the garage bays from the mainhouse look like?
In addition to the link Sam posted, there is a brief, and I mean brief, view of the rear of the garage wing in the episode "Mad Buck Gibson". It's the scene where Magnum and Mad Buck's wife go for a walk on the estate. They actually walk to the area at the end of the garage wing where there is the shed structure attached. They sit down for a moment and you can see both that shed structure and the rear of the garage wing. Mad Buck then speeds off in the Ferrari. It also shows what look to be drying lines for laundry which lead me to believe that shed was a laundry room. Also that shed structure interior is briefly shown in "The Kona Winds" in the scene with the dogs barking at Magnum. You can see a washer and dryer behind. I think my SketchUp model depicts it very accurately. Sorry I don't have the precise times of these scenes.

You are right. When my husband and I visited the tidal pool in March 2012, I carefully checked online for low tide; (my smart husband decided
to change the time on his watch (Winnipeg time), lol but the water was shallow enough to walk along the wall and take a peak through the back gate.
Then we walked through the Shriners Club lot and took a few pictures at the front. There was nobody there but us. It was nice having the tidal pool
all to ourselves. When we return, we will especially avoid the month of December just in case BO is there!

Just thought I'd share this tidbit of info that CalHwy sent me after he had toured the estate, and found that it was going to "another" bidder:
"BTW the 3d on the site rendering is very, very good, except the gate house has a 1 car garage. ALSO there is a structure behind the house never seen or discussed a large mens/womens changing room left over from a time when there was a need for it. I saw it but…was unable to get near it."
Don't know if that's the shed structure referred to above or not, but thought it was note-worthy to point out that somebody that actually got onto the grounds and saw things up close and personal, commented how good Pahonu's sketch-up model is.
Also, just my personal opinion, but I think Steve, a couple posts back, hit on the scenario that sounds very plausible, at least to me. Gonna take a WHOLE lotta money to refurb, maintain and stay at Robin's Nest....can't think of anyone more able than Miss Winfrey, unless it'd be Mr. Gates........

We know that the people involved are associated with Mr. Obama; are they also associated with Ms. Winfrey?

308guy,
I'm very pleased to hear my 3D model is so accurate. I actually modified the gate house garage to reflect the single bay you mentioned, but I don't think I ever sent JJ the newer version. I was aware of the bath house structure in the rear courtyard you refer to, but chose not to include it in my model because it was not part of the original design. I read about it in a blog several years ago from someone who visited the estate for a social function. From my understanding, it was added many years later to accommodate these types of events. In contrast, the original design included a slat house for propagating seedlings that was part of the original design but is no longer extant. I have no idea where on the estate it was located. The shed I was referring to in the previous post is located at the end of the garage wing. The one with the pass-through Magnum is seen going through to the guest house in most episodes. I'm not sure if I have seen the CalHwy photos you are referring to, but would greatly appreciate doing so to add to the accuracy of my model.
Since the release of the renderings associated with the sale, I now have a few more modifications to make to my model. It's an ongoing process.

No, not that anyone knows of. Pure conjecture.
Statement only serves to illustrate the fact that buying, upgrading and maintaining the estate is going to be a HUGE monetary undertaking and will be ongoing, given the property tax situation, and O.W. would be one person that could probably afford it without breaking her piggy bank.
I've heard that she visits/vacations on the islands and may even have a home there already, really don't have a clue, and haven't done any research to find out.
To be clear: There is no evidence anywhere of any kind as of now that would tie Miss Winfrey to the estate, the sale of the estate or the purchaser of the estate in any way, shape or form. Was basically a rhetorical statement.
That having been said, and hopefully straightening any confusion out.....it wouldn't surprise me to find out there's more to this story than meets the eye!
Oprah does have an estate on the island of Maui.
Michelle Obama visited her there and apparently the neighbors were very annoyed with all the security issues........be prepared Waimanalo!!!
I found part of this article interesting. I hope Marty purchases a few sump pumps for the basement! Lets hope it never happens, but I could see a few issues down the road with global warming.
Getting warmer.......
Mr. Kennedy represented Oprah (friend of Michelle Obama) regarding a dispute she was having with a neighbor in Telluride, Colorado.
