#1 Post by terryfromkerry »

Just finished another complete series revisit. 8 Seasons of the best classic '80's TV. I did not fully appreciate until now the amount of accolades, i.e., nominations and awards Magnum, P.I. garnered during its initial live television broadcast run.

1982: Emmy nominations - Tom Selleck as outstanding lead actor in a drama series. Donald P. as executive producer. Producers Douglas Green, Andrew Sneider & Rick Weaver also received nominations. Also a nomination for outstanding cinemamatography.
Golden Globe winner - John Hillerman. Nominee - Tom Selleck.

1983: Emmy nominations - T.S. as outstanding lead. Donald P. , Douglas Green & Rick Weaver again. Charles Floyd Johnson & Rueben Leder also receive nominations. Additionally there were several nomination for sound mixing.
Golden Globe nominees - T.S. & J.H.

1984: Emmy win - T.S. as outstanding lead. Nomination - John Hillerman as outstanding supporting actor. Donald P. , Johnson, Leder & Weaver again receive nominations.
Golden Globe nomination - T.S.

1985: Emmy nominations - T.S. outstanding lead & J.H. as outstanding supporting actor.
Golden Globe winner - T.S. Nomination J.H.

1986: Emmy nominations - T.S. outstanding lead & J.H. outstanding supporting actor.
Golden Globe nomination - T.S.

1987: Emmy nomination - J.H. outstanding lead.
Golden Globe nominees - T.S. & J.H.

1988: Emmy nominations - cinematography, sound mixing & guest performer Gwen Verdon.
Golden Globe nominees - T.S. & J.H.

Yep and she was AWFUL!!!!!! Not remotely believable as TM's mom at all. DPB has a history of bad casting when it comes to mothers.

Slight correction here. John Hillerman DID win (best supporting actor) in 1987, after being nominated the previous 3 consecutive years. So Selleck won once (in 1984) and so did Hillerman.

Have to say I felt Gwen Verdon was the right fit for T.S./T.M. Their scenes together were always credible and touching. She had a Hollywood acting career during its golden era. Apparently during that era she had an active role in teaching Jane Russell & Marilyn Monroe to dance.

She would have been considered a "get" at the time and sometimes that's all it takes.
