Ride in TC’s Helicopter

#1 Post by willhclark »

If you have not been for a ride on this exact replica of TC’s helicopter you should. Every detail has been recreated. https://paradisecopters.com/tours/oahu- ... 4Y7u6ROmaM

The pilot is also a big Magnum PI fan

I'm going to Oahu in a couple of weeks and would love to do this. Unfortunately at that price it's probably out of the question. No wonder TC was always trying to get Magnum to pay him gas money!

I was going to say, "You're crazy! It's worth it!" But then I saw it was "per person" - and "doors off" and "scenic landing" are $50 + $100 "per person". Damn that "per person" bit.

Incidentally, I recently bought a Jeep - mainly so I could take the doors off, like TC's chopper. I've been driving around like that all summer. It didn't cost me $50 extra per person per drive and (luckily) I didn't get shot at.... yet.

Kamiana is a hawaii resident discount and just requires a Hawaii drivers license.

Hi willhclark,
That's a neat link, thanks for sharing. By the looks of it, it's a first class operation and squared away, otherwise I don't think they could charge what they do.
I would only add a 'Buyer Beware' if any of our fellow Magnum Maniacs are tempted to go for a helicopter ride in a third world country or even in some cases
in the 1st world.
According to my brother's buddy from Rutgers, who was one of Reagan's presidential marine chopper pilots, you'd have to have a death wish if you took
a tourista copter ride overseas. These birds are expensive to maintain properly and instead of getting new replacement parts foreign copter tours are notorious for using recycled, stolen or shoddy parts manufactured in some crap fly by night operation in the farthest reaches of outback Pakistan by former East German garage mechanics.
Even here in America, he said he would never ride in a helicopter unless they let him examine the maintenance log.
Didn't the company providing the choppers for Magnum have a pilot crash and die? Happened on the old Highway Patrol too, the pilot had been seen
in a number of episodes.
Sounds like you'd almost have better odds if you sailed off into the sky with Mad Buck Gibson.
However willhclark, if you are willing to cough up the long green I would happily take the copter tour you linked to above.

Yes, an MPI chopper did crash and the pilot was killed. As I recall, both Manetti and Hillerman (who did not like to fly anyway) became very nervous about the chopper thereafter and soon the insurance company said no more stars in the chopper at all. Scenes with them in it after that were all filmed from the ground.

Paradise Helicopters is a first class operation.

They have 3 former Marine One pilots who flew the President.

willhclark,
Three former Marine One pilots? Did they found the company, as otherwise I would think it would be hard to attract such high powered talent.
Just an aside, but this reminds of a great Hollywood story. In the opening credit shots for McCloud, Dennis Weaver is shown hanging from
the skids of a helicopter as it lifts off a skyscraper roof and then soars up over Manhattan, "McCloud" hanging on for dear life.
Which he actually was.
Weaver was supposed to grab the skid, the hovering copter go up a foot or two at most and then drop back as Weaver would be replaced by a
stuntman who would use safety gear to hook himself to the skid. Unfortunately there was a communications snafu and the copter soared up and over
the building's edge in a heartbeat with the unharnessed Weaver hanging on as he experienced the greatest unfettered view
of Manhattan ever. Fortunately Weaver was an incredibly fit (was in the Olympic Trials for our 1948 team)outdoors man and held on.
Does anyone know if Tom Selleck ever experienced any dangerous moments filming Magnum? Or were all his action scenes done by stuntmen?
It sure looks like him when he is paddling around in the ocean, for example.

I just came back from O'ahu 2 weeks ago and got a chance to do the Magnum PI helicopter tour and got to see some stunning views of O'ahu - it's definitely worth it! Yes, I wore my red jungle bird Magnum shirt on this excursion! :D Here's an awesome professional video on YouTube of what they offer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_1uCXcafIw. Unlike the chopper in this video ours was doors-off (front and rear), so we really got a breathtaking and unobstructed view of everything. We felt the wind, the chills, the mist, everything! Highly recommended!! I initially didn't want to do a helicopter tour since I've always rented a vehicle while on the island (this time I got me a 2-door Jeep Wrangler) and have pretty much covered the entire island between my 3 visits, but when I found out they had a Magnum helicopter tour I just HAD to do it! One of the pilots (Jim) even looks like Magnum - Tigers hat, mustache, and all. They should have cast him in the reboot instead of this Hernandez joker.
