In the rental ad KENJI posted, they list the property having a "private" beach.....

I thought ALL beaches on Oahu and in HI in general, were public access.....does this set a precedence? Sure hope not.

Whether the new occupant will be BO or not, if the beach, and therefore, the tidal pool can be designated "private", then access could become unavailable in the near future. But if in fact, all beaches are public access, then we that plan to be able to visit in the "distant" future, could still dip in the tidal pool.

Come to think of it, I think I remember in Ki'i's Don't Lie, TM tells the "hotshot" (Jamison Parker) that "this" (meaning the beach behind Robin's Nest) is a private beach. Of course, that could've been "artistic license" on the writers/producers/directors part for sake of the episode, but they WERE on Oahu....even in the fantasy world of tv...just a thought.

Anyway, if nothing else, it will sure prove interesting to see how this plays out in the next few years.

Hope Conch is able to get the skinny and some great new pics during his upcoming stay in paradise.

$350 a night for the place next door....yea....it'd sure be nice to be rich! Hey Peter...still offering to kick in a couple bucks! :magnum:

You can say whatever you want in an ad. The word "private" probably just means you're not likely to be disturbed. I think most people wouldn't set up a beach chair right in front of someone's home, but I think the law actually allows anyone to do so.

No worries 308Guy.....it's not private......anyone can walk right behind any of those homes and set up a chair etc.....you just have to time the tides, otherwise the tiny beach behind that house is almost nonexistent. The guy is just stretching the truth......it can be very quiet there with not many people....mainly locals and a few of us M.Maniacs, so lets say it can appear to be somewhat private or private like without really being private.

To throw more cold water on the Obama theory, I can't help but think the residence of a former president (on a small, easily accessible location to the public) would require better fencing than what was erected last month, surely?
When I spoke to the workmen installing the new fencing, I got the impression that they needed to secure the property ASAP, as people were gaining entry to the property on a regular basis and it was becoming a problem. They seemed to have a sense of urgency.

Perhaps this fencing is a stop gap measure until something more robust is installed that is fit for an ex President. Who knows!!

Whew! Thanks KENJI and Styles....that's "most reassuring"...yea, I can relate to the difference between private and "P R I V A T E". :D

Either Marty or Barrack being there is probably going to change the accessibility, at least a little....just because they have "money" if for no other reason. Eve Anderson complained about being bothered by fans and curiosity seekers, and she also had money, so maybe that's a little bit of reinforcement of the theory that the beach and tidal pool will remain public access. I think it comes down to a matter of respect. If the folks who do visit show proper respect for property and privacy, there may be no problem with the continuation of the practice for those of us who desire it. Let's hope it goes that way rather than any other.

Thanks again for the words of encouragement to us"wanna be there" folks! :magnum:

Hi 308Guy,

Obviously I can't say anything for sure, but I'll take a guess on this one......... I would say Eve was land rich, but cash poor and when I say poor, I don't mean broke or on food stamps etc., but she appeared to struggle with maintaining Pahonu. Her father was wealthy and left her Pahonu and I would guess again, some money too, but depending on how much, she may have gone through the majority of it or was on a tight budget. Her stepmother, Barbara Cox Anthony was a billionaire, but I doubt she left Eve a huge fortune either. I think Eve enjoys the simpler things and lives quite a frugal life.....I could be way off here....again a guess. The sale of Pahonu has topped up her bank account very nicely$$$$$, but I bet she builds herself something small and nothing flashy. Having said all that.....even if she was rich like her stepmother the beach would stay open and the same goes for Marty.....unless he gets an odd visit from his buddy Barack. If Barack ends up visiting or even owning the place, there might be times when beach access in the tidal pool area might be monitored more, but closing the whole beach will cause a huge protest with his neighbors, locals and even tourists......it won't happen. I do think the security inside the walls around Pahonu will be tightened considerably and make Higgins proud. I'm sure Eve would've done something on that front if money was available. Marty and/or Barack can afford it and that is one area they can control, but not the beach....that's my two cents worth.

Thanks again KENJI.

All assertions sound reasonable to me.

Finances will certainly NOT be of any or at least much concern for Mr. Nesbitt OR Pres. Obama, whoever ends up at the estate.

One would think that it will be a "part time" or vacation/getaway home for either or both of them, although I'd think BO would probably be comfortable there full time, as from what I've heard, he called the islands home for a good portion of his early life. We all tend to return to our roots when possible.

As I and others have said previously, it will at the least, be interesting from here on out!

Looking forward to Conch's and anybody/everybody else's visit reports as they become available.

If Obama does prove to be the owner, I sure hope this thread doesn't "disappear" somehow in the interest of national security! There's a lot of detail on the estate to be found here.

Hmmmm.....Maybe, just maybe (if it is indeed Obama's) The ex-President will become a tad pudgy, always dress like a proper gentleman, drink his whiskey neat, write his memoirs and some cheap tawdry mystery novels all the while having a good time yelling over the fence to us fans dressed in our best hawaiian print casual wear........

LOL Steve,

The icing on the cake would be if that all happens with the Laurence Olivier accent that John Hillerman perfected as JQH. :D :higgins:
