The Complete DVD Set

#1 Post by Orrymain »

I hope someone is around to answer this. I recently bought the complete series set, and I noticed the ending credits are what I will call wonky. They cut off oddly (and sometimes prematurely) and there is no real ending to the theme. Sometimes it is a few seconds before the Universal logo plays. It's just really annoying and strange. Does anyone know the story on this? I've never owned a set of anything where this has happened.

I am only on the third season, but I also noticed a skip on the second disk. I actually already got a replacement set, but it also has that same skip. Is that on all sets or just a specific run?

Any help or insight would be appreciated. I just can't imagine such a sloppy situation for the end credits being acceptable.

I don't have the complete series set but on the individual dvd seasons--and not just on Magnum--the end credits of the first four seasons (iirc) often end abruptly in order to chop the old, classic Unversal logo fanfare because they instead insist on denying us our nostalgia by putting the newer version of it before each and every darn episode!

It's not just Magnum that has this, but also The Rockford Files, Kolchak: the Night Stalker, and probably every other Universal series put on dvd in the early years of the dvd format. It's annoying but at least we have mercifully few syndicated prints or (even worse) music cuts; can you imagine "Death and Taxes" without "Mama"?

I haven't experienced any skips on the single-sided dvds but had to rebuy season one after a few episodes had problems right out of the box. I've since purchased all of MPI on single-sided discs.

I actually talked with someone at Universal about it and the rep said no one had ever made them aware of the issue. They tested it out and confirmed that the issue was present. They also said it's unlikely a new set would be created at this point. The theory is that they grabbed the syndicated tapes instead of the original masters. From what you said, it's probably happened with other Universal programs (not all though as I own several Universal shows that do not have this issue). Thus, it's a live with it type thing.

Now that I've watched the entire set, the only glitch was the one I mentioned in Foiled Again. The rest was just fine. There were a couple of slow pauses that are no big deal and are easily overlooked, but the only skip was the S3 one.

Having now read the DVD section on this site, I see that a lot of this was noted there, though not the ending credits situation, which surprised me. Maybe folks just don't pay attention to ending credits, but I do.

Anywho, mystery solved in a way. Like I said, it's this or nothing since it was a Universal mistake they now acknowledge, but one unlikely to be corrected at this stage of the game.

They should release the entire series on Bluray. For quite some time Magnum has been aired in HD on various stations, so why don't they just sell the complete series in HD.
