Article on "rebooting" Magnum P.I.
Hello there, all. Saw an article in my local Oklahoma City paper this week that originated in the Colorado Springs Gazette entitled "5 Classic TV Shows That Deserve Reboot." First one listed was, naturally, Magnum P.I. Here is the story: gazette.com/5-classic-tv-shows-that-deserve...reboot/

I don't know about Jon Hamm as Magnum, but I do kinda like John Hannah as Higgins.

Funny of the five series mentioned - only one - "Star Trek," was successfully re-booted aka "The Next Generation," but the successful "re-boot," was a completely different show than the original and the author of the article want's a re-re-boot ?
In my opinion, the reason why MPI worked - was firstly, the great Tom Selleck (whom I don't think is per se a great actor, he just likely "is," what he portrayed - And he's great at it - no disrespect meant, ex. the Legend "John Wayne," was "John Wayne" (Marion Morrison) in every movie he was ever in ... And no one could ever replace him - likewise with Tom Selleck, as Magnum)
And secondly, a great Supporting Cast, whom I think really liked each other and it comes through - The camaraderie was not contrived, but genuine ....
Or I could be completely wrong

I agree totally. I have even made the same comparison regarding Tom Selleck and John Wayne.Lance Mannion wrote:Funny of the five series mentioned - only one - "Star Trek," was successfully re-booted aka "The Next Generation," but the successful "re-boot," was a completely different show than the original and the author of the article want's a re-re-boot ?

The show had a synergy that worked. The actors, writers, directors, everything fell into place and it was perfect. Other shows can have that as well, but replicating it never works. It's like "that great night out" - the right combination of people, the right place at the right time, and it's a great evening. If you try to make it happen again it rarely happens because you're trying to recapture magic instead of making new magic.
I'm resigned to the fact that someday there will be one, it's too late for the old crew to get back together and I don't think anyone will really green light the brilliant idea of using them as a bridge to a younger cast featuring their kids (maybe Dallas scared people off).
But if they would ...

Sorry, no way, there's not a group of actors today that could pull it off. The cast of MPI were the perfect family of actors and the chemistry could never be replicated - think Grease 2, or worse

A Magnum reboot would not be able to equal the original in other way. For one thing, times are too different. A 'new' Magnum would be focused on the playboy aspect, I fear. We'd get much too much of a certain type of nightlife. I doubt they'd refrain from doing that, not with today's culture. I love the way Tom Selleck insisted Magnum be played, based on what he'd learned from James Garner. It worked amazingly well. The way they do reboots today, TC would be a woman. Heck, Higgens could be. I'm not much of a fan of today's reboots. Few end up being worth a penny.

I sincerely hope they don't attempt a reboot.

I agree. As much as I'd hope a re-boot would be fun, in my heart I know it would be disappointing - as someone said above - the actors and chemistry of the show would be hard to duplicate. Unless it was the original cast reprising their roles 30 years later I'd rather just watch the series and enjoy the episodes we do have.steveadl wrote:I sincerely hope they don't attempt a reboot.

Lilly is back from Iraq and so are Rick and TC's boys. They visiting their pop's because they are in need of moral support and direction. It's a Christmas visit and all show up without any plan for the future. TC's son took to choppers, Rick's worked in intelligence , and Lilly was an arms specialist. Nothing to do, they all hit the town, get wasted, and end up on the beach waking up a mess as the sun rises. They all look at each other and laugh, making the decision that maybe, just maybe, they can convince their dads to let them stay. The story begins.

I was hoping for a re-boot/movie sequel with the original cast years ago - I think that ship has sailed as well. Just wouldn't be the same dynamic anymore with some modern day scenario and plot line, much older actors, Higgins wouldn't be played by John Hillerman anymore due to his health, they still probably wouldn't get access to the estate etc.TheDungeonMaster wrote:I agree. I think now that original dynamic just wouldn't be possible anymore.
