Magnum, A Superheroes Hero

#1 Post by J.J. Walters »

A Magnum fan recently emailed me some interesting info. Magnum P.I. is apparently often referenced/discussed in several different Marvel comic book series, namely The New Mutants (where the main characters are seen several times watching their favorite show, Magnum P.I.), The Young X-Men and Uncanny X-Men. There are MPI references in at last a half-dozen stories. Pretty cool!

Here are a couple of pics:

*sigh* Why does it always have to be about the "short-shorts"? Come on, the guy, even for the times, didn't really wear them all that much!

Magnum and superhero comic books, who knew? The Magnum influence is far and wide my friends. ;)

Sweet!

Now James, you have to realize that all the "kids" know about the 80's are short shorts and John Hughes movies!

Well, I'm a comic book geek as well, and I remember that. It's from the New Mutants Graphic Novel which came out in 1982, right in the middle of TM's heyday.

It looks like the scans here are a redo of that scene, because Bob McLeod was the original artist and these don't look like his style.

After further review, I see a character in the window who's from a later incarnation. It looks like it's a timetravel storyline where the new team goes back in time and they are looking in on that scene from the original graphic novel featuring the original team.

Hi Conch,

The pics are from Young X-Men #2 (2008). The New Mutant issues with Magnum references (according to the person who told me) are #3, #4, #7, #15, and #17. The Uncanny X-Men issue is #167, which apparently "opens with a bunch of kids watching 'Magnum, P.I.' on TV in a creepy mansion ... going about their day, joking with each other, enjoying 'Magnum'. Suddenly the wall blows apart and this terrifying group of…super heroes? Villains? …plows in and starts attacking the kids."

I never got into superhero comic books for some reason, but I love the "Big Book Series" from Factoid Books which contain vignettes from many of the top modern comic artists.
