It seems that Magnum is, in fact, in the wrong spot.

I always thought this was supposed to be a picture of Magnum after he graduated from the Naval Academy...not Joey. I was always impressed at how they got someone that would have looked like a young TS. It's been a while since I watched "Going Home," but I got the impression Joey enlisted in the Army or Marines and was killed in Vietnam as a soldier/Marine. I don't recall the exact dialogue, but I seem to remember something about him wanting to join up and become a hero like Magnum...to try to keep up with his big brother like so many younger brothers do. As a former little brother myself, I didn't get the impression that Joey would have been patient enough to go through the Naval Academy and then go to Vietnam. Vietnam very well could have been over or nearly over by the time Joey would have graduated from the Academy. How many years separated Magnum and Joey? 8 maybe 9 years based on the above photo. Magnum graduated from the Naval Academy in 1967 and was sent to 'Nam in 1967. That means Joey wouldn't have entered the Naval Academy until 1971 or 1972 and wouldn't have graduated until four years later. We were out of Vietnam in April 1975, however, we pulled our ground troops out much earlier, so I don't think there is any way Joey could have gone to the Naval Academy and then to Vietnam. So, I think the photo of the young naval officer is Magnum. JMHOJames J. Walters wrote:It is strongly implied that Joey is the son of Katherine and Frank. Based on the home movies seen in "Going Home", Magnum appears to be about 7 or 8 years older than Joey....
(Magnum appears to be 12 or 13, Joey 4)
Magnum was five when his dad died in 1951, so the home movie would be dated around 1958 or 1959. Therefore, Katherine and Frank must have been together since at least 1953. This also means that Joey would have been around 17 years old in 1970. We know Joey went through the Naval Academy because of this shot...
U.S. Naval Academy training is four years, so he would have been 21 at a minimum in 1974. The Paris Peace Accords were in 1973 and last personel left in April of 1975. He must not have been there for very long before he was killed.
The answer is obvious, old man. Logic is irrelevant. It's simply Tropical Madness. (J.Q. Higgins)

I obviously made a faulty assumption that Selleck would have been used in the flashback photo (and hence, it must be Joey). But I didn't think about the stache. Selleck couldn't shave his stache because the filming schedule was so tight! Therefore, it must be a young Magnum in the photo. My bad guys. Sorry for the confusion.
Higgins: It's not a scratch! It's a bloody gouge!
I think might have been the "other" Joey, from "Thicker Than Blood" (I know it was said about him. Not so sure about Joey Peterson.Miss Q wrote:IH I agree with your senario.... I dont beieve Joey was cut out for the military and did it to impress.... Doesn't TM say something like 'he didnt belong there'....
OK, I am going forward with this theory and adjusting my timeline accordingly.
