Sail On Jimmy Buffett

#1 Post by ConchRepublican »

Some are taken too soon.
Some you're amazed they have lived as long as they have.
Then there are those you never thought about them not being there.

Overnight on September 1st Jimmy Buffett passed away. Known to most of the public and casual fans for his party lifestyle, merchandising and concert shenanigans, what's often overlooked is how good a songwriter he was.

His signature song, Margaritaville, which became his business empire, is much more melancholy and reflective than the party anthem it has become. His foundation was as a 70s singer-songwriter, and thankfully his failure as such in Nashville was our win. Divorce and ride with Jerry Jeff Walker in an old Packard to Key West literally changed music.

Jimmy had found his home and we reaped the benefits.

Personally Jimmy Buffett, his music and mindset helped my wife and I through a very difficult time, we found solace and renewed purpose in the Florida Keys. Since then we have visited Key West almost yearly and contributed significantly to his fortune. There is more to say, but I think it better to leave it with Jimmy's own words ...

"There's still so much to be done"
~ Last Mango In Paris

"We've gotta roll with the punches
Learn to play all of our hunches
Make the best of whatever comes your way
Forget that blind ambition
And learn to trust your intuition
Plowin' straight ahead come what may"
~ Cowboy In the Jungle

"As the days grow more complicated, the nightlife still wins
I'm growing older but not up
My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck
Let those winds of change blow over my head
I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead"
~ Growing Older But Not Up

"Jimmy, some of it's magic, some of it's tragic
But I had a good life all the way"
~ He Went to Paris

"Most mysterious calling harbour
So far but yet so near
I can see the day when my hair's full gray
And I finally disappear"
~ One Particular Harbour

"He's somewhere on the ocean now
That's where he ought to be
With one hand on the starboard rail
He's waving back at me"
~ The Captain and the Kid

Sail On Jimmy Buffett ... thank you, for everything.

A sad, sad day indeed. Raising a toast to Jimmy. Fair winds and following seas.

Love this tribute, Conch. As always, you've got a great way of expressing things.

Thanks Styles . . . this one hit me hard. We knew he was sick but thought we'd have one more season.

We spent the week listening to his music, watching the tributes and then had our party celebrating his life this past Saturday. We had a cheeseburger bar and the margaritas were flowing. As he told his right hand man Mac McAnally, "I don't want a funeral, I want a party."

Phins up.

If you have not already seen Mac MacAnally first concert after Jimmy Buffet’s passing this you might enjoy it . Here is the link to the start of the concert on YouTube . https://youtu.be/QY5sN8aaVDs?si=lRtnrG5aVAYnnT1l
I think just about the whole concert is available one song at a time .

Thank you for the link, Laohu.
A guy on the radio claimed Jimmy Buffett made more money than the Beatles and was a billionaire plus some. Is that possible? Maybe he wasn't just talking about music revenues, perhaps Jimmy
invested in oil wells or something? I find it hard to believe.

I don't know if he was richer than Paul McCartney, but he made most of his money in restaurants, hotels, casinos, resorts and housing developments. https://www.margaritavilleresorts.com/

Warren Buffet who I think is Jimmy’s uncle once said that he could have learned a lot from Jimmy when it came to investing. Jimmy had several Restaurants chains , Land shark beer , a string of retirement communities and authored more than a few books and even wrote a play . I don’t know if Jimmy had more money than Paul but it really would not surprise me . There is no doubt that Pual made a ton of money but I have never heard much about how he invested it .

I did see this . . . very moving!

Mrs. Conch and I scored tickets to see Mac in April, should be a good, and I'm sure still emotional, show.

Correct, they just used to joke about it.

Jimmy DOES seem to be related however, to one or more of the mutineers from the Bounty, hey mentioned how many people in Tahiti he shared the same surname with.
