Re: The People vs. Orville Wright (7.21)
I think this is an extremely good episode and gave it a 9. The whole plot had me intruiged, a hitman after Icepick, Rick arrested for killing the hitman and imprisoned, and good old TM on the case!
- Magnum's broken nose was hilarious! Loved when he went to Icepick's and the old mobster asked him "what happened to the other guy" lol. By the way, was this house used in another episode? When Magnum walked in and talked to Frank Foley it looked identical to the home used in season 3 episode Flashback as the Danforth Estate but then in a different room where Foley gets the picture of Icepick "murdered" it's clearly the same house that was used in several other episodes (Season 1 Skin Deep, Season 2 Woman on the Beach, Season 8 Forever In Time, and a couple others). Maybe someone can clarify that for me.
- Higgin's interview process was awesome! In his own way sabatouging the interview process for Rick's replacement by purposely picking the worst candidates lol. The Taco House lady was expecially funny, loved her!
- Loved to see Icepick alive! He's one of my fav recurring but non major characters. And yes the gunfight at the end was cheesy right down to the couches stopping uzi bullets but it was pretty funny to see that dorky dude playing Foley get gunned down and his awful acting as he "died" lol.
The end really shocked me the first time I saw this. Rick gets out only to be instantly thrown back in? I find this a bit on the unrealistic side, first of all I doubt they had been fired in the last decade or so and wouldn't they have recognized that he was a weapons specialist in Nam and those were simply relics he had brought back? Maybe not as I'm not an expert on firemarms enforcement but it just seemed to me like that might have been avoidable. Then again Rick seemed to be popping up with uzis and machine guns that were far beyond illegal throughout the entire series so maybe this was just him getting his lol. Anyway, this was a really good episode in my opinion, I hadn't seen it in a long time until the other day and I completely enjoyed it!

Re: The People vs. Orville Wright (7.21)
I quite liked this episode it wasn’t great but when the plot isn’t stellar the characterisations and performances elevate the viewing experience.
Upsides – the hilarious interviewee who was hoping to use her feminine wiles on the board of the KKC to get her Rick’s job, being relieved that the passerby getting her skirt ripped off (by it being trapped in the car door of the fleeing accountant) was not a cheap ploy to show flesh but helps identify the getaway car from TC’s chopper, although they did seem to find that car a bit too easily.
The comedic effect of the sticking plaster on TM's nose - simple but funny.
Downside – apart from the obvious one of Carol being a guest star in YET another episode (ggrrrrr…) it was a rather routine plot with the late twist jolting the viewer out of the end of episode jollity (i.e. main characters share a joke and freeze frame on smiling faces to end credits).
One thing I did notice was it appeared to me that the first interviewee for Rick’s job sounded like his voice had been dubbed in with a rather stilted/put-on fake English accent. I’m speculating that when filming the actor used was American and later on the director thought it’d be a good idea to have him be an english guy.

Re: The People vs. Orville Wright (7.21)
Honestly the 7th season somewhat confused me originally because I thought it was going to be the last season. I did not know about the decision to have an 8th season until later. In Autumn Warrior I thought they were going to kill off Higgins. Then in On The Fly I thought it was the end of TC. Then in this episode I thought they were writing out Rick. I had no idea Limbo was coming and the original intent for an ending was killing off Magnum. This show was just a build up to Limbo IMHO.

Hahaha, love it! At first glance I actually thought this is a pic of TS, and was wondering what the heck it was from until I read on.Doc Fred wrote: Did anyone else think Magnum looked like Tim Strawn (Kid Shellen's evil brother) from "Cat Ballou" when he had the thingie on his nose??
Re:
The nose bandage made me think of Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown (with, as we all know, John Hillerman in a prominent role.) Except there weren't any other allusions to that movie in this ep.IslandHopper wrote: The opening scene of this episode shows Magnum being attended to for a broken nose, and rushed to the hospital. Does anyone know why the story called for Magnum to have a broken nose? I didn’t really see how that played into the episode. It was totally unnecessary. It was also distracting, watching Magnum walk around with that bandage on his nose for most of the episode. I just don’t know what the point of all that was. I hope it wasn’t just an excuse to set up the scene where Officer/Detective Reggert, runs after Magnum with the incident report in an effort to have Magnum sign it.
Re: The People vs. Orville Wright (7.21)
Magnum also mentions Doc Wei as if Rick had been there, maybe because he was being the emotional "bad cop"?
That reminds me of the time....
Re: The People vs. Orville Wright (7.21)
First time I saw this I really did think it was the end for the Rick character. But I was young, and I didn't know when or how they were ending the series.

The complex they use as Rick’s house is also used as Dr. Karen Harmon’s house in Heal Thyself.
Not to nitpick the episode guide, but the subtitles say “Riegert” and “Raney” not “Reggert” and “Rainy”
Continuity flub: Carol hands the waitress a $20 and for singles back. Then, later in the scene, she proceeds to get more money out of her wallet, leave it on the the bill tray thingy, and leave before the waitress ever returns with the change for her $20.

Ah yes, the bullet proof couch. You see that one in a lot of shows.
Overall, I liked this episode...this might have been the end of Rick had the series ended in Season 7. As far as Rick being a weapons collector, I don't think the war booty excuse is legal, though Carol Baldwin might know for sure. It happened a lot during WWII, but don't believe it was even legal then.
Good catch on Ferris Bueller's dad...I was going to mention that one as I read through the thread.

Shortly after that, they knock out one of the guards, and Magnum takes the guard's gun.Rutledal wrote:... during the shootout at Icepick's hide away where did Magnum get his gun from? He clearly states to T.C. that he didn't bring his own.
So, I came here to see if anyone else noticed about Magnum all of a sudden having a gun. Just watched this one(for the first time) and the episode goes from the scene when Magnum tells TC he didn't' bring a gun to a scene with TC knocking out a guard then Magnum busting in with a gun. We never see Magnum getting the gun. Seemed really odd to me especially since two scenes ago he made it point to say he didn't have one. So here I am quoting a 13 year old post...
Re: The People vs. Orville Wright (7.21)
I was going to ask about TM's gun as well. They did mention there was two guards, so he must've gotten it from the other one, and they didn't shoot it (or edited it out).
I think the nose thing was just so they could add a running gag about people commenting on it.
I don't think there would be a real-world reason involving Larry having a shiner. If he had a real one, they could've covered it with makeup. I think it was just a plot detail that was abandoned along the way but some of it had already been shot. Or eliminated in editing.
Coming in on the tail end of TM's escapade at the beginning was confusing. What happened? How did Rick know where TM was? If he knew he was going to take the rap, what did he need to tell Thomas?
It's obvious in retrospect that they were expecting us to realize Higgins was stalling hiring a replacement for Rick, but the moment with TM reacting to Higgins saying the candidate would still need to be approved by the board did not land. On initial watch, the editing, music cue and TM's reaction showed there was something significant about the statement but what that significance was was not apparent to me.
