The Taking of Dick McWilliams (2.10)

Re: The Taking of Dick McWilliams (2.10)
Posted this for the wrong episode! Call it a brain fart...dimentia setting in, not sure how it happened, but I realized what I'd done about an hour after I left the house. Thought it would be interesting to see who corrected me and by what means Didn't know if I'd lose my bars or get knocked back down to ensign or what, but talk about a blunder! Was meant to be posted in the Mad Buck Gibson thread, which is where I'm going to try to put it.
Anyway, glad nobody jumped down my throat with both feet, there ARE some forums where you don't dare post anything even remotely considered "iffy" let alone down right wrong!
Just supports my original feeling that Magnum folks are good folks!

I think this is the most poorly-named episode; it sounds like the title for a porno movie.

My guess is that this episode is pretty good. Probably most of us don't like it because we don't fell sorry for Dick McWilliams. The character is a real jerk
However there are some good moments and a lot of nice locations too.
Higgins and Magnum's "Rocky Beach" scene was shot at Papa'iloa Beach, on the North Shore, also known as Police Beach. Of course this beach is also famous because was used to film the Survivors Camp of 'Lost'. I've been there so I'm glad to post a pic I took there
This is the place where Magnum goes to find informations about Dick and Kaholo's hideout. It's the Heeia Kea Small Boat Harbor, located next to Heeia State Park on the East Coast.
As Rubber Chicken said before, Mitsu's house is the Spalding House (now the William Twigg-Smith Gallery).
Here is the entrance used as location at Makiki Heights Drive.

Thomas wears this yellow shirt for the first time

I know what you're thinking, but this time you're wrong.

Kalai-pahoa: Are you sure you're not Rubber Chicken with a different screen name?
I don't know how you do it, but I, for one, truly enjoy seeing your posts with all the locations pinned and named. Very nice job.

I think I noticed a consistency problem (or flub) that I probably would never have noticed before, but with watching again on cozi channel and on encore, they had shown just a week or so ago the episode from season 3 (1983) "The arrow that is not aimed". In that episode tozan was going to do seppuku.
But if you watch, it seems higgins had to tell magnum what that even was, and he seemed to not only not know what it was, but also didn't even know how to pronounce it correctly, calling it seppuki.
But in this episode (taking of dick mcwilliams), he seemed to know immediately what was going on, AND how to pronounce it correctly (and higgins wasn't there). Flub, or did he just mysteriously forget a year later what it was and how to pronounce it correctly?

One plus in this episode is Mike Post's music for the helicopter pursuit sequence, when Thomas and T.C. are following the jeep towards the tunnel. Give it a listen; it's excellent stuff. In fact, as the years pass I find that I have a greater appreciation for Mike Post's music in general; and not just his immortal TV show themes, but the musical underscore within the episodes themselves.

I've been watching some old Gunsmoke episodes and I stumbled across one starring Guy Stockwell.

Re: The Taking of Dick McWilliams (2.10)
I previously voted The Taking of Dick McWilliams an [8.0 Pretty Good] but after viewing it again last night, I would rate it a bit lower at a [7.0 Average at Best].
We just came off an episode--Wave Goodbye--which was about another person from Magnum's past which was also lacking in terms of information about their relationship to Thomas.
My criticism regarding the underwritten/ underplayed title role by Guy Stockwell remains. I must also add my disappointment with the tenuous interactions McWilliams apparently had with Magnum during their U.S. Navy days, as that period of Thomas's back story holds a degree of fascination for me, especially since there are so few details and that continues with this episode. Based on what we're given in the story, perhaps he and McWilliams weren't close and he was only a passing acquaintance? However, TM's rushing to Mistu's aid would belie that.

Re: The Taking of Dick McWilliams (2.10)
I watched this one last night and give it a 7.5 not great but not terrible either, just pretty average. I actually liked the beginning premise of the kidnapping and Magnum helping a friend and thought it got worse and extremely predictable the further it went. It was SO obvious that Dick's friend in the picture was in on the kidnapping (a nylon mask? stealing his girlfriends car as the getaway car after collecting the money?) This really ruined the mystery of the episode. I would say the plot was pretty crappy overall and this would have been a really bad episode of if not for a few great scenes:
- Rick talking to "Shakey", loved it! I always liked how Rick had connections, this time on the good side of the law lol.
- How cool to throw in another McGarret reference! I saw in another post that they tried to bring Jack Lord in to do a few small Magnum appearances as Steve McGarret. Too bad he refused!
- Magnum's yellow shirt, lol! I was dying laughing other than the fact that it almost hurt my eyes it was so bright, is this the only time her wore it? I sure can't remember another time.
- The Higgins/Magnum scene on the ocean is really quite awesome. It starts out funny with Higgins telling Magnum if he's going to kill himself not to do it on Robin Masters property. He acts SO uncaring about Magnum and is much harsher on him in these early seasons but you know he does as he goes on to share a story to try to make TM feel better. The mark of a true friend already showing in season 2!
- Ok Rick's whole black eye from the nun thing was great! And I loved how they saved it for the end for him to disclose who popped him. Great ending to see the guys cracking up and him saying "She was a big nun!"
Some obvious lowlights:
- Dick McWilliams himself, what a dispicable, unlikable, disgusting guy!
- Mitsu: for some reason I couldn't stand the actress who played her or her father, both terrible!
I love season 2 so while this isn't one that I watch often, some really good (and funny!) scenes helped make it better in my opinion.

I think Irene Yah-Ling Sun is a beautiful woman but only an adequate actress. Bad news for you, Milton, as you know probably already know, she'll be back as torch singer Marissa in S3's Flashback. Putting it politely, her vocal rendition of "Am I Blue?" is positively putrid. I'm sure it's made her the enemy of animals with sensitive hearing the world over.
However, I must defend reliable Hawaii Five-0, MPI, and Tales of the Gold Monkey actor John Fujioka. He's okay in my book (and maybe only in my book!)

I think you should give John Fujioka another chance. He is excellent in the season two Six Million Dollar Man episode, The Last Kamikaze.Little Garwood wrote:I must defend reliable Hawaii Five-0, MPI, and Tales of the Gold Monkey actor John Fujioka. He's okay in my book (and maybe only in my book!)
