The Rockford Files

Did I miss it? I can't believe The Rockford Files hasn't been included in these TV shows! There were a couple of posts about other things pertaining to it, but not the show itself! Besides being one of the best shows ever on TV. It is really the reason Tom Selleck got Magnum! Those Lance White episode were great! And the cast! James Garner, there is so much Rockford in Maqnum it's amazing! Noah Berry Jr, Stuart Margolin, Joe Santos(who also all appeared on Magnum), as did several other supporting cast members! It's just a great show!

I agree. The Rockford Files is a great show and on many levels better than Magnum. I loved Magnum PI growing up, but today I like the Rockford Files better. It is not as much of a formula as Magnum, and Rockford is more of the common man. I also appreciate that Rockford is not always drunk like Magnum must have been the first few seasons. Who wakes up at 11am and the first thing they do is go get a beer (even Rick doesn't drink in the morning at work where Magnum pounds back beers), then Magnum mooches off their friends? It's like Magnum got stuck at the emotional development of a 7 year old. Rockford is more mature and more real.

My mom was the biggest James Garner fan, so I remember watching the show as a kid, but my husband and I have started to watch the re-runs on Me TV (although we haven't seen much yet). It's very good. Garner, like Selleck, has a great everyday guy persona, despite being ridiculously good looking.

Oh yeah, and Rockford has one of the best theme songs and opening credit sequences ever!

Dare I say here that I like The Rockford Files even better than Magnum PI. Garner was fantastic as a (deeply) flawed hero, and the rest of the cast was superb as well. I'm also very excited that Warner Bros. recently released the first of two seasons of Harry-O starring David Janssen. The show debuted the day before The Rockford Files and shared many of the same qualities. Many critics regard it as the best use of voice-over narration in television history! Sorry Magnum, but I agree.

Anyone ever watch Harry-O?

I thought Harry-O was a great show! Now here's one for you! Darren McGavin was "Rockford" before Rockford! The Outsider, 68-69! Down on his luck PI. Sent to prison on a trumped-up murder charge for 6 years! Pardoned for It! It only lasted one season, but it was a good show! Look it up Google it, or maybe there's something on You Tube!

Count me in as another Harry-O fan. It's been SO long since I've seen it. It's times like these I wish I had a job (I'm a full time student), so I could buy more DVDs!

I do have the pilot movie, Smile Jenny, You're Dead, so I should probably sit down with that one soon.

agreed on the theme song/opening. I was never a religious watcher back in the day (only 45 now), but I saw my fair share. Good show and just haven't found a vehicle to watch it now (Directv customer). Not at point where I would buy the DVDs (still getting through my Magnum collection-baseball season has stalled me).

I do like James Garner a lot. Played a great role in the Great Escape as the Scrounger. Definitely a great everyman.

Never saw The Outsider, but Darren McGavin was a favorite of mine. I loved The Night Stalker and, of course, little Ralphie's dad from A Christmas Story. I'll check out You Tube and see what I can find. Thanks for the tip.

James Garner was good in Barbarians at the Gate. He plays the CEO of RJR Nabisco who tries to buy the company. Garner was very good. It is different than Rockford, but still good.

I forgot all about Barbarians at the Gate. That's been many years now, but I really remember liking it.

I received season 1 DVD of The Rockford Files less than two weeks ago and I've already burned through three quarters of the episodes. What a great show, with really, really clever writing. I've said to my self so many times already, "I didn't see that coming." I said it in a previous post but I'll repeat it. I think Rockford is a better show than Magnum. Hope I'm not banned from the forum for such blasphemy. :D Looking forward to getting more seasons.

Off to the pillory with thee! Seven days of public scorn and then you will be shamefully escorted to the outskirts of town (on your knees), never to return. This is the sentence imposed on thee. Just be thankful we didn't toss you in the gibbet!
