It is no news, Tom Selleck has always had an admiration for Burt Reynolds, and that goes way beyond the moustache.
After all, TS had been the co-executive producer of the TV series B.L. Stryker in 1989 -1990.
Well, this past weekend, I happened to watch Smokey & the Bandit and the resemblance in acting stroke me, especially regarding the following points:
•The hilarious laughing
•The classical “Now wait a minute, wait a minute !!!” Magnum often uses when trying to make a point.
•Breaking the fourth wall. (maybe a suggestion made by TS to the directors of Magnum, P.I.)
In no way does this make TS any smaller, it just was funny discovering aspects of Magnum in Bandit – so to say. Or rather a nice tribute from Tom to Burt
If you haven’t watched it for a while, I strongly invite to do so and check it out by yourselves.
Aloha

Vanity,
I think you have something with your analysis and comparison of Burt Reynolds and Tom Selleck. I think the writers of MPI think so too. If I remember correctly, toward the end of the episode, "This Island Isn't Big Enough" (Season 6), Clyde Kusatsu's character helps Magnum, Higgins and TC rescue Rick. As they are leaving the island Clyde's character talks about making a movie about his life and I believe he said that he wanted Burt Reynolds to play Magnum. So, you must be right.

The answer is obvious, old man. Logic is irrelevant. It's simply Tropical Madness. (J.Q. Higgins)

"Television's Burt Reynolds" - that's what they used to call Tom Selleck.
Burt Reynolds is also referenced in Italian Ice (when queried about Magnum's whereabouts, Higgins says he doesn't know, but he is "probably doing a Burt Reynolds impersonation for the tourists somewhere", or something to that effect) and L.A. (the trailer bit).

Higgins: It's not a scratch! It's a bloody gouge!
I thought I know Smokey & The Bandit by heart, but I gotta watch out for these similarities the next time watching Burt as Bandit.
Don´t get me wrong, I am a guy and like girls, but don´t find women it sexy anymore if guys have a moustache? I´d prefer it to those gangster style or goat beards anytime.

To answer your question Klaus: In my opinion, it would depend on how a man's mustache looked on that particular man, if I found it to be "sexy" or not. Mr. Selleck's mustache is "Mag"nificent to say the least, and really enhances his already (and this is understating this observation!) "good looks". Talk about hitting the gene-pool jackpot! I think if a man can't grow a "decent" mustache, he probably shouldn't have one at all. The same goes for beards. Skinny pencil thin mustaches don't really "turn me on" either. In fact, my husband and I have been married for 34 years, and I've NEVER seen him without his mustache....except for baby pictures and one picture of him when he got out of boot camp in 1964! LOL
