Re: Home From the Sea (4.1)

I have to confess that the twist in the tale - perhaps partly because you can see it coming - packs an emotional punch which made me cry. I love the fact that Magnum as a series is like a lucky dip: everything from dark tales to light comedy. Just when you think you have seen every shade it has to o...

Re: Letter to a Duchess (4.6)

Not a 'classic' episode for me, but one piece of interior monologue or narration stuck with me. "Sure, I know it's crazy to refer to whatever Higgins and I share as friendship, but it is. We fight and bicker like an old married couple, but somewhere - mixed in with the jibes - is a funny kind of mut...

Re: The Tom Selleck Thread

Caught Tom Selleck's light-hearted interview with Kelly Clarkson on YouTube and just wanted to say how nice it is to see a star fondly remembering his long run in Magnum PI, as opposed to so many who want to forget a long-running series they have been in and merely suggest that they have 'moved on'.

Re: Deja Vu (1) (6.1)

Has anyone commented on the clear homage to Patrick McGoohan's The Prisoner, as Magnum takes the same route past the Houses of Parliament in a classic convertible? Didn't notice this the first time I watched Deja Vu...

Re: Deja Vu (1) (6.1)

As a Brit, I enjoyed all the British stereotypes here, from the tweed jackets to the choice of cars. Wonderful locations. Loved the script which managed to balance surrealism, slapstick humour and emotive content. Watching this two-parter felt like a Magnum movie. Great stuff.

Re: Foiled Again (3.8)

Despite the cheesy title, I find this an emotive story, and it is certainly true that the English 'public school' - meaning private school bizarrely - system can alienate children from their parents. Think Hillerman and Selleck play off each other beautifully here. It is often what is left unsaid - ...

Re: The Welcome Wagon

Hi, my name is Rodney Marshall. Got the bug for TV action-adventure from my dad who came to the US in the late-50s, wrote briefly for a couple of shows before returning to the UK and writing scripts for the next thirty years. I have not inherited his creative talent, but I do write book guides to cl...

Re: CBS Canceled the Reboot

Thank you for the comment and the welcome. That review from the Guardian newspaper summed up my views on reboots of classic shows. My dad was a scriptwriter on a number of UK (and US) shows from 1958-92 and I know how much hard work goes into creating a genuinely new series. If producers want to ret...

Re: CBS Canceled the Reboot

I have to confess that I have never seen the reboot. For me, part of the charm of an iconic series is the way it captures the spirit of the times. For me, Magnum PI is the 80s. Nor can Tom Selleck be replaced. This is what one of our UK newspapers said when the reboot was first announced in 2017 and...

Re: Did You See the Sunrise? (1) (3.1)

Watched this episode recently for the first time in decades. I tend to enjoy the ones with Vietnam backstories. I love everything about this tale, from the elegiac title to Magnum finally doing something radical you don't expect from a TV action hero. Such variety in Magnum PI, both in terms of mood...

Re: For New Members - PLEASE READ

Huge Magnum PI fan living in the UK. Only recently discovered this wonderfully encyclopaedic website. Looking forward to re-watching the series on Blu-ray and offering the odd comment here and there. Loved the sheer variety of stories, the Magnum/Higgins rapport, the locations...and the dogs, natura...
